Eroded Die Coins
(This page is a bit lame - to be rebuilt some day.)

I suggest taking the ANA Course on the Modern Minting Process, Errors and Varieties, and various on grading coins.

An eroded die is one that has been used extensively to mint coins, the the surface of the die is showing great wear.

There are heavy die flow lines, less detail on the devices, and distorted lettering towards the rim.

(I'll add more text on this at a later date.)

This is an average 1987 dime.

The the lettering is sharp (relatively).
There are the beginnings of die flow lines.

This is a 1987 dime from an eroded die.

The letters are "spread" or distorted towards the rim.
The outer edges of devices or lettering is not sharp. it has eroded to a ramp-like edge.
